1 US$ in millions

The analysis of the financial trends reveals significant changes in the company's leverage and equity over the observed periods. There is a clear evolution in the long-term debt levels as well as in the stockholders' equity, which directly impact the debt-to-equity ratio, an important indicator of financial structure and risk.

Long-term debt
The long-term debt including the current portion remained relatively low and stable from 2006 to 2009, with values ranging from 22 to 230 million US dollars. Starting from 2014, there is a marked and consistent increase in long-term debt, rising sharply from 1,494 million US dollars in 2014 to 14,023 million US dollars in 2022. This upward trend suggests significant borrowing or issuance of debt instruments beginning in 2014, reflecting a shift towards greater leverage.
Stockholders’ equity
Stockholders' equity showed fluctuations across the timeframe. Initially, it increased from 2,364 million US dollars in 2006 to a peak of 7,484 million US dollars in 2013. However, after 2013, equity exhibited a downward trend with some variability, declining to 5,395 million US dollars in 2018. In the subsequent years until 2021, equity showed moderate recovery, reaching 7,312 million US dollars, before declining again to 6,298 million US dollars in 2022. This pattern suggests varying profitability and retained earnings impacting the equity base, potentially influenced by dividend policies or share repurchases.
Debt to equity ratio
The debt-to-equity ratio remained very low and relatively stable before 2014, ranging between 0.01 and 0.1. This indicates a conservative capital structure with limited reliance on debt financing during these years. From 2014 onward, however, the ratio increased sharply, moving from 0.22 in 2014 to 2.23 in 2022. This rise reflects the aforementioned increase in debt relative to equity and indicates a pronounced shift toward leverage. The increasing ratio suggests heightened financial risk with greater debt burden compared to shareholders' equity, which could impact the company's cost of capital and financial flexibility.
