1 US$ in millions
- Long-term debt, including current portion
- The long-term debt exhibited notable fluctuations over the period analyzed. Initially, it increased sharply from 3,677 million USD at the end of 2005 to a peak of 22,991 million USD in 2006. Following this peak, debt levels declined significantly until 2008, reaching 10,600 million USD, and then showed moderate increases and decreases in subsequent years. From 2009 to 2011, debt rose from 11,149 million USD to 15,230 million USD before decreasing to 13,269 million USD in 2012. After this dip, debt slightly increased again, reaching 15,751 million USD in 2015, before a modest reduction to 15,323 million USD in 2016. This pattern indicates periods of significant borrowing followed by deleveraging efforts and some stabilization in the later years.
- Stockholders’ equity
- Stockholders’ equity showed a general upward trend from 527 million USD in 2005 to a maximum of 21,857 million USD in 2013. This increase suggests enhanced capitalization or retained earnings growth over most of the period. However, after peaking in 2013, equity declined steadily, falling to 12,212 million USD by 2016. This decrease in equity during the latter years may imply dividend payouts, equity repurchases, losses, or other transactions reducing shareholder value.
- Debt to equity ratio
- The debt to equity ratio demonstrated a marked decrease from a very high 6.98 in 2005 to a low around 0.56 in 2008 and 2009, indicating a shift toward a more balanced or less leveraged capital structure during those years. Subsequently, the ratio experienced minor fluctuations, rising to 0.84 in 2011, decreasing again to 0.62 in 2013, but then reversing course with an upward trend to 1.25 by 2016. This increasing leverage ratio in the final years points to either rising debt levels relative to equity or declining equity, consistent with the observed trends in both long-term debt and stockholders' equity.
