Balance Sheet: Liabilities and Stockholders’ Equity
The balance sheet provides creditors, investors, and analysts with information on company resources (assets) and its sources of capital (its equity and liabilities). It normally also provides information about the future earnings capacity of a company assets as well as an indication of cash flows that may come from receivables and inventories.
Liabilities represents obligations of a company arising from past events, the settlement of which is expected to result in an outflow of economic benefits from the entity.

The financial data reveals various trends in liabilities, equity, and other balance sheet components over the five-year period ending December 31, 2016.
- Current Liabilities
- Current liabilities showed significant volatility, increasing sharply from 3,994 million USD in 2012 to a peak of 10,234 million USD in 2014, largely influenced by the recognition of a 5,210 million USD Tronox-related contingent liability in 2014. Following this peak, current liabilities declined substantially to 4,181 million USD in 2015 and further to 3,328 million USD in 2016. Accounts payable decreased steadily from the high of 3,683 million USD in 2014 to 2,288 million USD in 2016. Accrued expenses peaked in 2013 at 1,264 million USD before falling to 386 million USD by 2016. Short-term debt appeared sporadically, reaching a maximum of 500 million USD in 2013 but remaining low in other years. Other current liabilities such as interest payable and production, property, and other taxes payable emerged from 2014 onward at modest levels.
- Long-Term and Noncurrent Liabilities
- Long-term debt, excluding the current portion, generally increased from 13,269 million USD in 2012 to a high of 15,718 million USD in 2015, followed by a slight decrease to 15,281 million USD in 2016. Deferred income taxes decreased notably from 9,759 million USD in 2014 to 4,324 million USD in 2016, indicating a reduction in tax liabilities or changes in tax positions. Asset retirement obligations showed an increasing trend beginning at 1,587 million USD in 2012 and culminating at 2,802 million USD in 2016, suggesting growing future liabilities related to asset retirements. Other long-term liabilities varied but showed a general decline from 14,045 million USD in 2014 to 11,458 million USD in 2016. Noncurrent liabilities as a whole remained relatively stable, oscillating around 26,000 to 29,000 million USD over the analyzed years.
- Total Liabilities
- Total liabilities peaked at 39,371 million USD in 2014, coinciding with the spike in current liabilities, before decreasing to 30,067 million USD by 2016, reflecting the reduction of contingent liabilities and other obligations. This pattern indicates episodic recognition of large liabilities followed by settling or reclassification in subsequent years.
- Equity Components
- Common stock remained largely constant near 52 million USD, with a slight increase to 57 million USD in 2016. Paid-in capital steadily increased from 8,230 million USD in 2012 to 11,875 million USD in 2016, indicating ongoing capital contributions or equity issuance. Retained earnings declined sharply from 14,356 million USD in 2013 to 1,704 million USD in 2016, reflecting either accumulated losses or substantial distributions. Treasury stock, represented as a negative figure, increased in absolute value over time, reaching -1,033 million USD in 2016, suggesting continued repurchases. Accumulated other comprehensive loss fluctuated, with a partial improvement from -640 million USD in 2012 to -285 million USD in 2013 but remaining negative throughout. Overall stockholders' equity declined from 21,857 million USD in 2013 to 12,212 million USD in 2016. Noncontrolling interests increased steadily, reaching 3,285 million USD in 2016. Consequently, total equity peaked at 23,650 million USD in 2013 and fell to approximately 15,497 million USD by 2016.
- Total Liabilities and Equity
- The total of liabilities and equity rose from 52,589 million USD in 2012 to a maximum of 61,689 million USD in 2014 but then contracted to 45,564 million USD by 2016. This decline coincides with the reduction in both total liabilities and equity components, indicating a contraction in the company's overall financial size or asset base during those years.
