1 US$ in thousands

Total debt
The total debt remained relatively stable from 2005 to 2007, hovering around 750 million US dollars. A significant reduction occurred in 2008, with debt dropping sharply to 43 million US dollars. From 2008 through 2012, debt levels stayed low, fluctuating modestly between 37 million and 41 million US dollars. However, starting from 2013, total debt increased substantially, surpassing the one billion mark and continuing an upward trend through 2016, reaching over 1.3 billion US dollars.
Total stockholders’ equity
Stockholders’ equity exhibited a steady upward trajectory from 2005 to 2009, growing from approximately 8.6 billion to nearly 12.5 billion US dollars. This growth continued moderately through 2012, reaching around 14.6 billion US dollars. In 2013, equity slightly decreased to about 13.1 billion but surged dramatically in 2014 to over 38.7 billion. There was a subsequent decline in 2015 to approximately 29 billion, followed by a moderate rebound in 2016 inches closer to 31 billion US dollars.
Debt to equity ratio
This ratio was stable at a low level (around 0.08 to 0.09) between 2005 and 2007, reflecting a conservative use of debt relative to equity. From 2008 to 2012, the ratio dropped to zero, consistent with the significant reduction in total debt. Beginning in 2013, the ratio rose again but remained relatively low, fluctuating between 0.03 and 0.04 through 2016, indicating a modest increase in leverage but maintaining overall financial conservatism.
Summary
The data reveals a strategic reduction in debt starting in 2008, significantly lowering financial risk during that period. The substantial increase in equity, particularly the peak in 2014, may indicate asset revaluations or significant capital injections. The return to increased debt levels post-2012, coupled with a modest rise in the debt to equity ratio, suggests a cautious expansion or investment phase. Nonetheless, debt remains a small fraction of equity, reflecting a strong equity base and a conservative capital structure overall.
