Total Debt
The total debt exhibited a fluctuating trend over the period but generally showed an increase in the later years. From 2010 to 2014, total debt decreased from $4,551 million to $3,321 million, with a slight increase noted in 2014 to $3,999 million. A significant rise occurred in 2015 where debt jumped sharply to $9,212 million, remaining high through 2016 at $9,187 million. Following this peak, debt decreased steadily until 2018, reaching $7,354 million, and stayed relatively stable through 2019 at $7,365 million and 2020 at $7,609 million. By 2021, total debt saw a notable increase, reaching its highest point at $10,572 million.
Stockholders’ Equity
Stockholders’ equity showed considerable volatility over the examined years. Initially, equity increased modestly from $986 million in 2010 to a peak of $1,301 million in 2013, after which it declined sharply to $538 million in 2014. A dramatic resurgence occurred in 2015, with equity rising significantly to $11,515 million, maintaining a high level through 2016 and 2017 at approximately $10,935 million and $13,527 million respectively. In subsequent years, equity declined steadily from 2018 onwards, falling to $6,528 million by 2021.
Debt to Equity Ratio
The debt to equity ratio mirrored the volatility seen in both debt and equity values. From 2010 to 2014, the ratio steadily declined from 4.62 to 2.55, then spiked sharply to 7.43 in 2014, indicating a disproportionate increase in debt relative to equity at that point. From 2015 onwards, the ratio decreased significantly to below 1.0, reaching a low of 0.49 in 2017, highlighting a period of improved balance between debt and equity. However, from 2018 to 2020, the ratio rose moderately but remained below 1.0, indicating relatively moderate leverage. In 2021, the ratio increased to 1.62, suggesting a renewed increase in leverage.
