Debt payable within one year
The short-term debt exhibited fluctuations over the observed period. In 2016, it started at $1,133 million, then decreased to $953 million in 2017. There was a notable increase in 2018 to $1,208 million, followed by a further rise to $1,534 million in 2019. In 2020, the debt payable within one year sharply declined to $486 million, indicating a significant reduction in short-term liabilities by the end of that year.
Long-term debt, excluding payable within one year
The long-term debt remained relatively stable from 2016 through 2019, fluctuating slightly between $6,213 million and $6,472 million. However, in 2020, there was a marked increase to $7,878 million, which represents the highest level within the period. This rise suggests an increased reliance or issuance of long-term debt during 2020.
Total debt (carrying amount)
Total debt showed a moderate upward trend across the five years. Starting at $7,572 million in 2016, it slightly decreased to $7,425 million in 2017, then gradually increased each subsequent year to reach $8,364 million in 2020. This overall increase was primarily driven by the rise in long-term debt in 2020, despite the reduction in short-term debt payable within one year during that period.
