Investment Accounting Policy
A financial asset is classified as available-for-sale when: (i) it is not classified as a loan and receivable, a held-to-maturity investment or as at FVTPL; or (ii) it is designated as available-for-sale on initial recognition.Goldcorp's investments in marketable securities and equity securities are classified as available-for-sale and are measured at fair value with mark-to-market gains and losses recognized in other comprehensive income ("OCI") and accumulated in the investment revaluation reserve within equity until the financial assets are derecognized or there is objective evidence that the financial assets are impaired. When available-for-sale investments in marketable securities and equity securities are derecognized, the cumulative mark-to-market gains or losses that had been previously recognized in OCI are reclassified to earnings for the period. When there is objective evidence that an available-for-sale financial asset is impaired, the cumulative loss that had been previously recognized in OCI is reclassified to earnings for the period. Impairment losses previously recognized for available-for-sale investments, except for investments in equity securities, are reversed when the fair values of the investments increase. Reversals of impairment losses are recognized in net earnings in the period in which the reversals occur.
